Name: Arthurius (Arthur) Galbatroix
Group: Elder
Age: 215 (human years)
Positions:
-Second Son of the King and (since the death of the kings first son) heir to the false throne.
- Dragon Elder and Shurgutal master
-Former (exiled) member of the Varden (though still loyal)
-Next in line for the leadership of the Elders
-Grandmaster/General in the Imperial Army
Abilities:
Due to Hero status this character is above the ability system…
Members may decide how to react to situations should they arise.
Appearance:
1.85 meters tall, silver hair with a small silver moustache.
Is usually dressed in his elder armour (as life isn’t safe anymore without it) but can sometimes be seen wearing formal elegant cloths with a white cloak for special occasions.
Wears two rings…his royal ring given to him by his father Galbatorix, and another the sacred ring of an Elder.
Personality:
A serious and very dangerous rider.
Fearsome in battle, there were few who could even think about standing against him during the time of the Forsworne and even now, people who remember him, quiver when they hear his name, Arthurius or Arthur Galbatorix as he likes to be called.
Even though his father is hated, (by the varden…the empire tolerates him) Arthur is a just and loyal servant of the Elders…and as such of the Varden.
However because he is the kings son, few if, any dare to oppose him in the empire and even now the king does not know of his treachery…
Preferring to keep his relationship with the Varden and the Elders secret, his father the king does not know about his secret life…at least not yet.
History:
Born to royalty, Arthurius was the second son of the king Galbatorix.
This was probably what saved him, as unlike his brother, he would never become king after his father’s death. (Should the king die) (Since it always went to the eldest).
Saved from the underwhelming desire to please his father (and the greed his brother felt for the throne) Arthur was able to keep his head clear at all times and he soon learned that his father was not the good man he was brought up to believe.
As a member of the royal family, Arthurius was trained to become a master in the arts of the sword and arrow and would participate in numerous tournaments.
Sadly competitors were too afraid to fight him (being the kings son) and usually let him win (much to Arthurs disappointment and embarrassment)
On one such occasion Arthur lost his balance on his horse (he didn’t have a dragon at that time) and fell to the ground.
His shocked opponent, afraid of what the king would do if he won, faked his own fall and practically through himself of his own horse.
Arthurius (in pure disgust) hurled away his sword and demanded that his opponent attack him and finish what he had come to do.
The outcome:…Arthur spent the next week in hospital with a punctured rib and a deadly wound (where the sword had cut into him…miraculously surviving)…his opponent was made captain of one of the kings battle groups (to hide the fact that Arthur had just been another normal soldier…and to make the defeat look honorable. ..well at least a bit.
This soldier lost his life a week later in another duel…but that’s another story.
When Arthur was 16 a dragon hatched for him from a dragon egg and the king made him into one of his loyal foreswore riders… (the 6th)
However Arthur was never happy with the role…
Though he never disappointed his father, he only followed orders and didn’t look for greater power like the other foreworns. (That’s probably why his father let him do what he wanted to do, since he saw no treat in his second son… (who didn’t care much for the throne).
For a brief time, Arthur became friends with another rider who was called Alfabre abr Celobre..
The friendship blossomed until, Alfabres’ dragon was killed by a shade.
Alfabre was never seen again, while Arthurius continued to serve the king for many more years.
Finally even his turn came.
At the time, the king was fighting the last remnants of the old dragon riders (the last few who were still around to …amuse…Galbatorix), and Arthurius was beside him (close by) when his father attacked another dragon and its rider…
The rider, being overwhelmed by the king, fought bravely but in the end the king killed his dragon and left the rider to die.
That’s when it happened…and when everything changed…
Arthur, instead of leaving the rider to die, saved the riders life instead. (before rejoining with his father)
Arthur never told his father about this act…but a year later this act of mercy was what changed his life…forever.
One year later Arthur was fighting against another rider, when his dragon was slain…
Out of pure fury and despair Arthur continued to fight and even though he was outmatched he managed to disarm the rider and already had his sword at the riders neck, when he stopped.
For the first time, he could see who the other rider was…
The rider removed his helmet and looked straight at Arthur.
”You fought bravely and well and deserve to live…take it…it’s your prize” the rider said…(meaning his head)
(The riders dragon just stood there…(too far away to do anything) and just watched)
Arthur was shocked… it was the same rider, who he had saved a year ago.
Finally after a minute or two he takes away his sword from the riders throat and spoke… (while at the same time removing his own helmet)
“No…I spared it once…ill spare it again…you won in a fair battle (meaning the previous one) and I lost…go…life is too precious…my time has ended…may yours just begin”
With this Arthur started to walk away…still deeply shaken by his loss.
The other rider couldn’t believe it…too shocked to speak; he just stared as Arthur walked away…with great respect and wonder in his eyes…
Two years later…
The king had finally declared that all of the old riders (who opposed him) had been defeated.
Having recently lost his right hand (Morzan), Galbatorix was not in a very good mood.
Arthur was becoming increasingly annoyed and worried.
His father…who seemed to become more evil every year...was beginning to enjoy murdering and torturing people.
To make matters worse his brother, was becoming paranoid.
Thinking that people were constantly plotting to murder him (which they were), he had recently started to suspect Arthur…even though that was probably the last thing on Arthurs mind.
These should have been the best years of Arthurs life, but the constant treat from his brother and the frequent rampages of his father, slowly but surely turned him against his family.
However, even then Arthur was still loyal to his family and it was only when his brother, convinced that he…Arthur was planning to murder him had somehow managed to convince his father to arrange an investigation.
Scared for his won life, Arthur fled the Capital, and started to hide in the Beor mountains, which were one of the only places where his father wouldn’t go to.
During this time Arthur adopted a different name and it wasn’t long until he joined up with the Varden.
Due to his sword skills and his magic (one of the few) he quickly rose in the ranks…adopting their way of life as his own.
While he was still royal at heart, Arthur was slowly changing, and (already turned against his former family) learned just who his father really was…
Twice he thought about redeeming himself and telling his father where the Varden were hidden, but twice he couldn’t do it.
Finally it was too late…he had become one of them.
It was around this time when the old rider…the one he had saved twice sent for him one day.
Expecting another dangerous secret mission into the Empire (due to his knowledge) Arthur entered the room.
Needless to say, he was stunned to see his old enemy.
Fearing the worst, Arthur had already given himself up as lost, when the rider offered him something…something which he did not expect ... he offered him a new life…a “real” chance to redeem himself.
The life of an elder….and a new dragon.
Unknown to Arthur, this man had been watching him ever since their faithful battle….and was now the last remaining rider (besides Oromis … Bron had lost his own dragon at this time)…deeming Arthur worthy the rider had chosen him to become an elder.
Arthur never looked back…
In the following years, Arthur quickly became one of the most loyal supports of the Varden had ever seen.
Little did they suspect that he was actually the son of their sworn enemy…until he told them.
What happened next nearly tore the Varden apart…and co-operation between the Varden, Dwarfs and Elves nearly collapsed…it also nearly cost Arthur his life.
It was only when Bron, one of the founders of the Varden found a compromise (with the help from Arthur) was it that disaster was averted.
Arthur had been willing to leave the Varden…to lead the life of a traveller…a lonely hermit…banished from the rest…and it was only this which satisfied the Varden enough that it didn’t collapse.
None of them but the other elder Bron and a few of the other leaders would have Arthur anywhere near them.
This was probably the most dangerous era for the Varden, and Arthur constantly felt like returning home since his brother had recently died and his father was now desperate for a son…his son to return…having (seemingly) forgiven him (Arthur) for his past mistakes (which he hadn’t committed)…this would have doomed the Varden but the last elder…seeing the treat came up with a desperate plan…the dragon eggs.
And so it was (even though Arthur was noe free to go where he wished and do what he wished. ..under the protection of the king and re-instated member of royalty) that the two elders swore the pact ….and hid the eggs all over Alagaesia…(with a little help from Alfabre, who was recruited shortly afterwards)
Disaster had been averted…for now… but…would it be enough?
