I was just thinking (dangerous pass-time, I know) and I'm wondering about something. If we get new points for every 50 posts, and we make tons of OOC posts, we get new points. Well, what if a new person comes along and looks around? Wouldn't it seem kind of intimidating, to have all these people with so many more points than you do? (Everyone who is really active has already upgraded their character/s at least once, after all.)
There's also another thing: Wouldn't it be easy for people to just post OOC and do nothing IC until they gain lots of points? Because then they get to upgrade their character without ever using him/her, and doesn't that kind of defy the purpose? Maybe I'm overthinking.. I do that sometimes.. but what opinion does everyone else have on the subject? I know that I would find it as a challenge to come upon the board at this stage, but a lot of people (my friends, for instance) would think it just wouldn't be worth it to try to catch up.

Ah good someone is making use of the Council!
Yes ...that’s a very relevant point Seris...thank you for raising the question. In fact I have been thinking about this too.
It really does seem like a 'deterrent' for new members doesn't it. At this point I believe its time to explain why the ability system was created:
The whole idea of the Ability system was to help members in ‘battle situations’ There are numerous abilities (strength, intelligence, dexterity etc). Each can be updated whenever a member reaches a set amount of posts (every 50 posts gives 5 exp points) which can be used to become stronger and to give you an edge over your opponent. These abilities would then be used when deciding who would win in a battle, in a given situation… For instance: if your in a fist fight the person with a higher hand to hand skill would usually win, Intelligence governs how clever you are…or flying skills (dragons) would govern how well you can fly… (Remember members can still decide otherwise if they wish to do so…the ability system is there to help and to settle disputes not to create the problems)
Basically the more you post the stronger you are and the more you win.
Ok...in light of the circumstance...(since we really do need more members)... If the system really does keep away members from joining then we really should so something about it.
Would everybody (if they wish) please say (here) what (a) they think about the system and (b) what would be best for the site (Not for themselves)...
Should we?:
(1) Restrict the post count - If you choose this then your post count, the amount of posts you have made, will only increase in the RPG sections. The post count will no longer increase in areas like the games sections or other non RPG areas. Remember the posts count governs your experience level and your abilities.
(2) Remove the ability system - Just what it says…totally remove the ability system and go back to the old system where we let members have total control over what happens and where we let them settle ‘most’ disputes by themselves…
(3) Do something else. (Please give a detailed description of your proposed idea)
(4) Keep everything as it is!
Once we have enough ideas I will create a poll. Where everybody will then be allowed to vote in a referendum on what should happen.
The sites in your hands…make of the best if it…make yourselves proud!!!

lol at seris though I think this topic was mainly meant for me I say we should keep it as it is but if any one (including me) starts abusing the off topic section and never RPing then you should restrict it for them if you can until they begin RPing again

I won't actually be able to keep track on the amount of pure RPGing posts members makes...so I'm afraid that won't work. (The Post count system doesn't have an option for me to do that)
I can increase or decrease the post count of a member manually, but in the long run this would become extremely tedious...and so extremely unpractical. ..so sorry Shep...your idea is good...but....it would be impossible to successfully enforce.
I'll either restrict it for everybody or for nobody!

No, no; I didn't mean you. I didn't mean anybody in particular. It's really great that we have a lot of posts, especially considering that we only have a handful of members. I just meant that it might seem.. intimidating to newcomers to face up to so many people who are so much better, so that they will almost certainly lose in any sort of confrontation.
Actually, part of it had to do with a conversation with one of my friends about it, and partly because I can't seem to get anyone to join. Reneey even said that she felt like she was way behind, and at the time I thought she meant just the books, but lately I wonder if she didn't mean the abilties, too...

I know what you mean Alf but I was thinking that if any one starts posting ALOT in the OOC section (you don't have to know all the posts that he has there) and not at all in the RP section until he is really powerful then that could become a problem and you could manually take his post count down about say. . . 2/3s of his post count or what ever, just a suggestion
and Seris I know what you mean but we really don't use the abilities for much any ways

Well, that's probably because everyone who we have so far (and is active) is with the Varden; so there isn't much battling going on. Any one of my friends would most likely want to be with the Empire (hehe, we're all evil that way >=D), and so it would matter to them if they ran across you or Cadence or even me and something happened to cause a battle. Which would also be quite likely... My friends often play angry or violent characters when they're "bad guys." *rotfl*
